NASA scientist Dr Harold “Sonny” White has been confirmed as 1st keynote speaker for Icarus Interstellar’s Starship Congress event this summer. Titled “Warp Field Physics: An Update,” Dr White’s further development on his provocative 2011 “Warp Field Mechanics 101″ paper as well as his 2012 “Warp Field Mechanics 102″ symposium presentation is already speculated to be one the most highly anticipated occasions at the upcoming exotic-physics-and-space-future summit.

Dr. Harold “Sonny” White has over 15 years of aerospace industry experience with Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and NASA. He currently serves as the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate and is the JSC representative to the Nuclear Systems Working Group. He is also pursuing theoretical and laboratory research on developing lower TRL advanced propulsion and power technologies in the advanced propulsion physics laboratory known as Eagleworks, located at JSC.

Dr. White’s talk “Warp Field Physics: An Update” will review the space warp energy optimization techniques and analysis findings presented at the 2012 100 Year Starship Symposium. He will reintroduce and discuss an interferometer experiment identified in that talk and provide a status update of the experimental effort, along with a discussion of upcoming activities, and additional testing techniques and approaches. Finally, Dr. White will provide a modification of the original Matthew Jeffries XCV Enterprise artwork for the original Star Trek series, and discuss the differences to help articulate the math and physics findings at the beginning of the talk.

He was recently featured in the April 2013 Popular Science article “Warp Factor”, focused on his work at Eagleworks, specifically on advanced concepts around faster-than-light travel.

Dr. White holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Rice University, a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Wichita State University, and a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of South Alabama. He has worked with members of academia, industry, and government to further grow this area of research resulting in many published papers, presentations, development and study of physics models, engineering tools, and the implementation and execution of multiple high fidelity experimental efforts.

While serving as the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System Manager during Return to Flight, he was awarded the NASA Medal For Excellence in Achievement by the Administrator for his role in getting the Thermal Protection System robotic inspection tools built, delivered and certified to support the STS-114 mission. He was recognized by the crew office with a Silver Snoopy Award for his unwavering commitment to safety and mission success demonstrated by his actions in the discovery and disposition of critical damage to the robotic arm prior to the STS-121 mission. He has also received the Spaceflight Awareness Honoree award for the STS-122 mission, one of the highest, most prestigious awards available to employees of NASA.

Dr. White’s talk “Warp Field Physics: An Update” will review the space warp energy optimization techniques and analysis findings presented at the 2012 100 Year Starship Symposium. 1. John Bensted says:

I’ve been waiting for an update on Dr. White’s research. Just one question … where and when is the talk going to take place?

  2. John Bensted says:

Also, it would be nice if Eagleworks had its own NASA web page.

  3. John Bensted says:

Oh I got it, it will be at the 2013 Starship Congress. Silly me!

  5. Miles Gilster says:

Yes, Dr. White will be presenting at the 2013 Starship Congress. As the date gets closer, check the schedule page for updates on when particular presentations will be given during the Starship Congress.

    • John Bensted says:

Would it be possible to simulcast the Starship Congress online? Perhaps for a nominal fee? I can’t make to Dallas this year.

  6. Steve says:

We need to compile a list of potentially oil rich planets who are crippled by nutbag religions (are’nt they all?) to attack on false pretences, like WMD’s, for instance, lay waste those places, turn the entire universe against us, yet again, and gain not a drop of oil, or a cent in reconstruction contracts revnue for our trouble. Oh, we do that here already…One day, we will tangle with a power who can actually fight back, and woe betide Earthlings then.

Looking forward to hear and/or read Dr. “Sonny” White’s presentation. I am very skeptical about the utility of “warp drive” technology or “wormholes” or “FTL” technology. I suspect that these are are chimeras like alchemy or perpetual motion machines. Still, I believe in the future of interstellar space travel albeit more slow moving than I would personally like. However,ALL concepts should be explored – you never know what useful technology might be spun off.

    • Tom Stone says:

True, but until we understand dark matter and dark energy, we cant say it is or isn’t possible. Combinations of dark energy/matter constants could be canceled and again could attribute to an anti-gravity affect, mass cancellation effects and even detachment of the regular space time we understand today, creating an Einstein-Rosen bridge type effect at multiples of c/light speeds, maybe even light years per second. Its all hypothetical, until we either find it either by mistake or work it out. Never say never :)

  8. John Bensted says:

If gravity waves can only propagate at the speed of light, then how can warp drive exceed that?

    • Shayne O says:

It isn’t traveling at faster than light. Thats the nub of this. Relativity prohibits it relative to the local frame. But this simply takes the local frame and moves *space* itself. The ship itself remains quite stationary (relative to local space).

We can actually see that this is possible in physics because cosmic inflation in the universe is pushing stuff away from us at what looks to be faster than light. In reality whats happening is the space between us and those distance galaxies is expanding and both us and that remote galaxy are traveling well under C. Think dots on an inflating balloon. The dots are on the same part of the balloon they always where on, but the distance between those two parts of the ballon is expanding.

The properties of why mm’ exists is because of allow ability. The ability properties let the properties of mm’ to transmit…..Einstein is correct in that not any natural event can go as fast as,or faster than light. No speed. c+1. This is true. No natural event can go faster than the speed of sound. Not any heavier than air machine will ever exist and carry people. Humans cannot go into the deepest ocean, or venture space. Naturally it is true that non of it is possible without machines. Human kind will venture forth with ftl faster than light spacecraft…..For those of you who have solved the questions, don’t patent, don’t publish, maintain secrecy. Don’t give unto the Caesars more power than they ever thought possible. After the next presidential election, maybe. If the marxist/socialists retain the Presidential Office, then keep you secret tigher.

    • Tom Stone says:

Hello, the speed of light depends on the density of space time, its a constant, but if you change space time density you dont only change the speed of light but also time. Things remain relative inside the changed area but in comparison to external space time, it doesn’t. Dark matter is another aspect that could be manipulated and could hold the key to interstellar FTL propulsion as it is this that gives most of the universe the extra dimension, more so a galaxy while in motion the ability to stay together without flying apart. Normal propulsion is far too dangerous for interstellar travel, more so at high velocities and he time slow down effect from mass increase is again not practical at all.

  10. Tom Stone says:

Hello, is anyone working on(hypothetical) high voltage inertia cancellation systems and research into space time density changes?
    Regards TS.

  11. Hank says:

Has he detected a warp field or not. That is the question. If he has it an earth shattering break through. Can any one ask him?

Thanks for the link. I noticed the page with the results of the tests lacks text. I guess we’ll have to wait until the presentation at the Starship Congress.

  13. argo says:

From what I can read the article’s approach is revisiting the alcubierre metric in a 4+1 multidimensional (with respect to the normal 3+1) spacetime. Hence the boost is not due to the “space warp” but rather to moving out of the brane and into the bulk.I found also in another paper “The Alcubierre Warp Drive in Higher Dimensional
    Spacetime”: “It is
interesting that this line of thought has its roots in cosmological inflation. In this process, we noted indirectly that a
toroidal positive energy density could yield a spherical negative pressure region. Perhaps the reader is still
struggling with the concept of how a toroidal positive energy density develops a spherical region of negative
pressure. The short answer is that is what the math predicts. The intuitive answer is that it is a consequence of
living in a higher dimensional universe and having the requirement of satisfying the First Law of Thermodynamics.” So it would seem that you do not need negative energy desity to do the job. Am I missing something?

  14. We don’t believe that it is possible to break speed of light limit, but we consider that “field” engine is realistic idea. Help us to promote our work while author is still capable to work, he has been working on his theory for last 40 years, he is 76 now, it was impossible to achieve a minimal visibility at Soviet time and now the same situation, absolutely nobody cares.

Look at following article please, it is small introduction:
    http://blog.maths.ru/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1%3Acoordinate-axes-of-materialized-reality&catid=1%3A2011-06-22-18-41-46&lang=en

We don’t have a single assumption or speculation in our work only pure math and rigid equations. We don;t write about speculative ideas, but we ready to share in conversations. Our work is published in internet for last 15 years already.

  15. Mark says:

We do know a few facts so far.

Fact 1: Speed of light has been broken in the lab by humans at least three times now so light is NOT the speed limit.

Fact 2: Aluminum would be required in any ship containing humans because radiation in Space is much greater than on earth or a planet and aluminum cuts radiation levels by at least 50%.

Fact 3: Other materials especially magnetism would make it possible to create at least an unmanned ship to travel faster than the speed of light.

Facts are we will be able to do this but no one knows how long before even a test flight let alone a human or other living creature in a ship is tested but I would take a guess and say the first unmanned ship takes off in 2030, first non human animal in 3038 and first human in 3040s.

As for typical flights 22nd century so we are only 100 years away from this being light a jet plane and most here will be around to see an unmanned ship break light speed HOWEVER; engines MUST use magnetism and I hope the Dr. is working on that and knows this fact. There will be no solid, liquid, gas or plasma fuels used in this so forget the old ways.

Okay, I admit having a little inside info but not saying how but I do find the year 2014 interesting but barbaric.
